Some people believe that CBD was only recently discovered in the late 1900s. Having such therapeutic benefits, doesn't it make you wonder if it would have been used in a much earlier era? If you would like to know more about the history of CBD, keep on reading!
Dating back to the year 2737 BC, it was noted that the Emperor Shen Neng of China had given cannabis-infused tea to his people to help improve gout, rheumatism, malaria and memory loss. The tea quickly became highly sought after all over Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and even in India where marijuana was consumed for stress relief and for certain religious activities by some Hindu sects.
Moving forward to the year 1492, it is said that Christopher Columbus brought cannabis to the New World in the form of hemp ropes, and in 1619, a Jamestown colony law stated that it was mandatory for their settlers to grow cannabis. It is said that even Queen Victoria had used cannabis to help her with menstrual cramps, which was prescribed by her doctor, Sir J. Russell Reynolds.
Israeli scientist,Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, who is known as the “God-Father of cannabis”, discovered everything you need to know about cannabis and its components. In 1964 , he and his team discovered a way to isolate the CBD compound from the cannabis plant, and he didn’t stop there. He also explained its structure and chemical components as well as the differences between CBD and THC.
A few years later in 1988, the first cannabinoid receptor was found in a mouse, and researchers speculated that since the body has cannabinoid receptors, then it should be producing them naturally. Because of this, it made other researchers curious about these receptors and the compounds they interact with, so more studies led to a breakthrough two years later.
Researcher,Lisa Matsuda, discovered how to clone the cannabinoid receptor, thus allowing scientists to analyze and study it more closely. Raphael Mechoulam and his team then made another discovery. They found anandamide and 2-AG, which are the two main cannabinoids produced naturally by the body. They later renamed them to “endocannabinoid”, using the prefix “endo” which means “within”. Because of these discoveries, CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors were later found in humans. This means that our bodies are able to respond to cannabinoids such as CBD and THC because our bodies were designed to respond to them. This led scientists to name the group of cannabinoid receptors in our bodies the “endocannabinoid system”.
Charlotte Figi is a prominent figure in the CBD world who had suffered from a rare form of epilepsy. In 2012, her family worked with a group of brothers who were breeding medical cannabis called hemp, which has a high percentage of CBD and very low amount of THC. When Charlotte was given the oil extract from these plants, her seizures decreased immensely. With this groundbreaking discovery, cannabis became known as a “‘miracle worker”, and it increased in popularity as time went on. Now we are here today where 1 of 7 adults use CBD products.
